Originally from Cuernavaca, owners Eduardo and Sylvia Ralla established Colibri Mexican Bistro out of their longing to bring the authentic dishes of their childhoods in Central Mexico to San Francisco. Named for the Aztec symbol of vigor and power, the hummingbird, Colibri pulses with potent spices, bold flavors, and vibrant colors.
Colibri's elegant dining room and bar are reminiscent of Mexico City restaurants in the early twentieth century, with elegant wrought iron accents, mahogany furniture, classic Spanish paintings, and vividly-painted ceramics. Pick your favorite from Colibri's collection of rare and uniquely-shaped tequila bottles or peek into the open kitchen to watch the chefs at work.
Fresh ingredients and careful preparation are key at Colibri, where the corn tortillas are made by hand and the guacamole is prepared table-side to your exact specifications. Try the Mole Poblano, a legendary sauce made of spices, chiles, nuts and chocolate in the traditional Puebla style, served over chicken, with any one of Colibri's more than 350 100% Blue Agave tequilas.
"Excellent, carefully conceived and executed, high-end Mexican fare. The gratis, house-made tortillas are awesome. The fresh guacamole is killer. The entrees are all really good- the pato en pipian (duck in a delicious green mole sauce), filete mignon (accompanied by delicious mashed potatoes, one of the more filling entrees on the menu), and carnitas are personal favorites, but I have never been disappointed with anything I've tried here." - Brian H., San Francisco, CA
"Order their fresh guacamole. It's made table-side and you can request hot, medium or mild spice. Comes with fresh-off-the-press mini tortillas instead of the usual chips. Definitely a treat." - Cathy K., San Francisco, CA
"You can't go wrong with Colibri. Plus, do what my friends and I have done: start the night with cocktails and dinner at Colibri, and then head down Geary to Rye or the Ambassador to keep the night going!" - Ria D., San Francisco, CA
